The Facebook Blog announced yesterday (April 6, 2008) that they would slowly be releasing Facebook IM onto the entire Facebook Network. Now I personally thought this was a great business move for the people at Facebook, and also an excellent addition for the millions of users online each day. The first thing that came to mind however was now that they are releasing Facebook IM, just what could be next?
Well first off nearly all of the other IM networks AIM, Gmail, Hotmail/MSN allow users to create their own email addresses and get a free email address. If you think about it, isn’t it surprising that Facebook hasn’t created its very own email service? Facebook would then be a complete monopoly, which spells out terror for other email services. With all of the time and returning visits that users pay to Facebook each day why not just put in a free email service as well!? Everything in one place, or at least pretty close.
Introducing my idea of “Facebook Search” to the Facebook Network. Now I am obviously not the first to think of this idea, but again this is just one more thing that could lead Facebook in a whole new direction. Users would have an entire search engine at their fingertips, perhaps without even leaving the Facebook site to search. Think about the possibilities when you have a site that gets millions of visits a day!
Just take a moment to look at the future of what Facebook could introduce and offer to its users. Whether you think it is good or bad, it just may become a reality.
